a different sort of Silicon Valley narrative, a literary-minded outsider’s insider account of an insulated world that isn’t as insular or distinctive as it and we assume. But the real strength of Uncanny Valley comes from her careful parsing of the complex motivations and implications that fortify this new surreality at every level, from the individual body to the body politic. Wiener deploys this strategy liberally, with adroit specificity and arch timing. All you have to do after that is juxtapose them with the effects of the city’s rocket-ship rents: a once-lively counterculture gasping for air and a 'concentration of public pain' shameful and shocking even to a native New Yorker. It’s possible to create a realistic portrait of contemporary San Francisco by simply listing all the harebrained new-money antics and 'mindful' hippie-redux principles that flourish there. Luckily, the tech industry controls the means of production for excuses to justify a fascination with its shiny surfaces and twisted logic. Wiener frequently emphasizes that, at the time, she didn’t realize all these buoyant 25-year-olds in performance outerwear were leading mankind down a treacherous path. Wiener was, and maybe still is, one of us far from seeking to disabuse civic-minded techno-skeptics of our views, she is here to fill out our worst-case scenarios with shrewd insight and literary detail. The music and lyrics of "Coal Miner's Daughter" had been written entirely by Loretta Lynn. The song has been covered several times since its original release, notably being a collaboration from Lynn, Sheryl Crow and Miranda Lambert. It would also be considered one of music's most significant recordings, according to polls from Time and the Recording Industry Association of America. It would become one of Lynn's signature recordings in her career. "Coal Miner's Daughter" would receive positive reviews from journalists and music critics alike following its release. Lynn, who was born in 1932 and experienced the Great Depression as a child, also describes her childhood and the circumstances she was raised in during those years. Produced by Owen Bradley, the song tells the story of Lynn's coal-mining father in rural Kentucky during the Great Depression. It was later released on an album of the same name. Considered Lynn's signature song, it was originally released as a single in 1970 and became a number one hit on the Billboard country chart. KirbyRead NowLee had knacks: for putting words on pictures, for peanut gallery banter, for gimmicky ear prodding, verbal drumrolls, the hey-gang tone, mock grandiosity… Now he makes a handsome living as an icon while pretending to be a creator. It was more like Jimi Hendrix was in a band with whoever did the words for “Incense and Peppermints.” Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko (the label’s Syd Barrett, I guess) had talent. Michael Hill sent us this article, as well the Interviews piece we published in June, for consideration for The Kirby Effect. The first half of the book is, as promised, a cultural history-4,000 years of literature references to rabies, hydrophobia, "rage" disease, and dog- and bat-borne contagion in places as far-flung as various mythologies (Greco-Roman, Christian, and Egyptian, to name a few) medical literature from Aristotle to Pasteur and even the vampire myths from medieval times up to Sesame Street's Count. Indeed, while the recognition of the rabies virus is just a bit over a hundred years old, Wasik and Murphy trace the infection back to antiquity. It's subtitled, "A cultural history of the world's most diabolical virus," and this emphasis makes Rabid unique. In a new book, "Rabid", Bill Wasik and Monica Murphy have penned an ambitious history of rabies. are typically due to wildlife exposure (rabid bats or even beavers or rabid kitten), infected dogs remain the main vector of infection in most rabies-endemic countries. Today is World Rabies Day, a reminder that 55,000 people still succumb to this virus every year-most of them in impoverished regions of Africa and Asia. However, worldwide, rabies is another matter. In contrast, lightning is responsible for about 60 deaths each year. In developed countries, human disease is incredibly rare-we see typically one or two deaths from rabies each year. Rabies is a disease without a public relations firm. His rather soothing voice can lull you into a sense of peace just when you are ready to hunt down the author and torture said author until they stop torturing your favorite character. Once again, Gary Furlong's performance was excellent. Each scene has carefully chosen language, rhythm, and pace that matches the chemistry between them at that moment. Virtually very sex scene with Ben and Nikolas showcases the personal connection between them. I don't consider literally porn to be even remotely the same as romance. This seems important if you are writing an actual romance rather than smut. I read romance frequently, but I tend to skim excessive sex scenes because most authors miss the mark on building an emotional connection in a sex scene. Second, John Wiltshire has a talent for writing steamy romantic scenes. I am rarely surprised by this style of plot twist, but the magician's handwaving trick worked on me this time. Nikolas is outmaneuvered from time to time, but I wasn't expecting this. First, the author has a talent for creating unexpected plot twists. Two things stood out for me in this book. The widespread media coverage of the atrocities by Serbian paramilitary and military forces against Bosniak women and children, drew international condemnation of the Serbian forces. The trial of VRS member Dragoljub Kunarac was the first time in any national or international jurisprudence that a person was convicted of using rape as a weapon of war. Although the ICTY did not treat the mass rapes as genocide, many have concluded from the organized, and systematic nature of the mass rapes of the female Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim) population, that these rapes were a part of a larger campaign of genocide, and that the VRS were carrying out a policy of genocidal rape against the Bosnian Muslim ethnic group. The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) declared that "systematic rape", and "sexual enslavement" in time of war was a crime against humanity, second only to the war crime of genocide. Estimates of the total number of women raped during the war range from 12,000 to 50,000. While men from all ethnic groups committed rape, the great majority of rapes were perpetrated by Bosnian Serb forces of the Army of the Republika Srpska (VRS) and Serb paramilitary units, who used genocidal rape as an instrument of terror as part of their programme of ethnic cleansing. During the Bosnian War, and the Bosnian genocide, the violence assumed a gender-targeted form through the use of rape. |
